Nostalgia as Nigerians recount 1988 AFCON final loss to Cameroon

Emotions were clearly running as Nigerians recounted what happened in Morocco as Nigeria lost in the 1988 AFCON final to Cameroon.

A second-half penalty from Emmanuel Kunde settled the tie in Casablanca but the memories still linger in the minds of those who watched the match.

Mr. Yinka Tinuade and Lanre Adeola went back and forth on what happened on the fateful day as Cameroon beat Nigeria to win their second AFCON title.

Mr. Yinka Tinuade was of the opinion that Nigeria got robbed as a legit Henry Nwosu goal was disallowed and that the penalty awarded to Cameroon should have been a free kick at best.

While Mr. Lanre Adeola agreed with Mr.Yinka Tinuade that penalty shouldn’t have stood because Roger Milla made a meal out the tackle that was on the edge of the box. He however, felt the goal scored by Nwosu was rightly ruled out for offside.

Another Nigerian named My Nwokolo called Referee Idrissa Sarr of Mauritania the kill joy and hatchet man used to execute CAF’s Issa Hayatou-centric broad-day light heist of the then Unity Cup.

He lamented that the great Super Eagles team were robbed in a game they didn’t deserve to lose.
