Novak Djokovic Explains Why Tennis Players Deserve Higher Pay

Novak Djokovic has shared his views on why tennis players should be earning more money for their efforts in the sport.

The 37-year-old, who co-founded the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), spoke out following a major announcement that sent shockwaves through the sport. Earlier this week, the PTPA filed a lawsuit against tennis’ governing bodies.

The timing of the legal action raised eyebrows, as it came just after the Indian Wells Masters ended and the Miami Open got underway.

A press release from the PTPA outlined seven key issues they believe have been neglected by the sport’s top decision-makers. One of the main concerns raised was player earnings. According to the PTPA, prize money has remained fixed, limiting how much players—especially those lower down the rankings—can earn.

Speaking at the Miami Open, Djokovic said that although he is content with his own career earnings, he feels strongly that lower-ranked players should be earning a better living from the sport.

“When it comes to a viable living, I want as many players as possible to have that opportunity,” Djokovic said. “I don’t think there should be any limit or number to that. At the moment, there are not enough players who can actually live from playing this sport.”

He added, “At the highest level, we are earning good money, and of course, I cannot complain at all about myself. Far from it.”
