Novak Djokovic claimed a record-extending 10th title at the Australian Open to come full circle at his most successful major tournament. The title win in Melbourne means that Djokovic has now equalled Rafael Nadal’s record haul of 22 Grand Slam titles.
After wins over Tommy Paul and Karen Khachanov in their respective semifinals, Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas faced off in a second major final after their French Open meeting in 2021.
With the Australian Open title and world number one ranking on the line, Djokovic was not to be stopped as he swept past his younger opponent in straight sets. The 35-year-old Serb won the first set 6-3 before Tsitsipas tried to find a way back into the game, forcing a tie-break in the second set before ultimately falling 7-6 to Djokovic, who went on to win the third set 7-6 to seal a straight sets win over the 24-year-old Greek star.
Just 12 months after being deported from the country and losing his ranking points, Novak Djokovic has returned to win his tenth title in style, reclaiming the world number one spot from Carlos Alcaraz.
