NPFL 2020/21 Matchday One Preview
In March 2020, the 2019/20 NPFL season was truncated as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and 17 of the club owners agreed to end the season after a protracted period of uncertainty. The final league standings was made based on a Points Per Game model, with no promotion and relegation.
On the 27th of December however, a new season is set to kick off.
Last season’s third placed team, Rivers United look to lock horns with Rangers International FC at home in Port Harcourt, as last season’s bottom boys, Adamawa United taking on AITEO Cup holders, Kano Pillars inside the Pantami Stadium in Gombe.
Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina plays host as Katsina United face Heartland FC. Nasarawa United are at home to Wikki Tourist FC in Lafia, while Kwara United hope to start this season better than they ended the last, as they visit Jos to take on Plateau United. The Akwa Ibom derby between Akwa United and Dakkada FC is scheduled to hold at the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Uyo.
Jigawa Golden Stars will look to welcome Sunshine Stars of Akure to their adopted home in Kaduna, as the Anambra Warriors, FC Ifeanyi Ubah entertain last season’s 4th placed team, Lobi Stars FC. The Olukoya boys, MFM FC will play host to Warri Wolves at the Soccer Temple in Agege. To round off the first round of fixtures, Enyimba play host to city rivals Abia Warriors, in another derby at the Enyimba Stadium on Monday, 28th of December.
All matchday one games are scheduled to kick off at 4pm, with both the Akwa Ibom and Abia derbies set to be televised live on NTA. All other games can be watched on the NPFL TV application, which can be downloaded from the Google Playstore or App Store.
