NPFL: Akwa United FC target first-win of the season vs Gombe United FC
2020/2021 Nigeria Premier Football League winners, Akwa United FC are targeting a first-win of the season when they face Gombe United FC on Wednesday, November 1, 2023.
A new month, Coach Fatai Osho will hope his lads finally get win to erase memories of their poor run in October.
Akwa United FC are without a win after five-weeks of the 2023/2024 NPFL season and occupy 20th spot on the standings.
The Akwa United FC vs Gombe United FC fixture is one of ten NPFL matchday six games scheduled to take place in mid-week.
The match will take place at the Eket Stadium, same venue the Promise Keepers were held to a goalless draw by Shooting Stars Sports Club in week four before an improved performance earned United a first away point vs Bendel Insurance FC on Sunday.
For Akwa United FC stand-in skipper, David Phillip, sitting bottom on the standing is a ‘ matter of great concern to everyone at the club ‘ a situation they are determined to change when they square up vs Gombe United FC.
David Phillip said “Our position on the league table is a matter of great concern to everyone at the club and we are fully aware that it is up to us to get it right in our next game. It’s unbelievable that we are without a win after five matches. Where we are on the table doesn’t really reflect the way we played those games.
“I’m happy that at the moment, the mood in camp is very encouraging and we have motivated ourselves well enough because everyone wants to play and contribute to the team’s success. The level of commitment and determination is such that we just have to get the job done starting with this mid-week match against Gombe United.
“We know it’s not going to be easy but we are prepared and ready to give our all and ensure we record victory. The league is very competitive and we know how much a win will boost our confidence and where we will be on the log. Victory on Wednesday may be the much needed turn around to kickstart our season”.
Akwa United FC will be further motivated by their superiority in head-to-head statistics.
In fourteen meetings, the Promise Keepers have won eight, to Gombe United’s three while three of those encounters ended in draws.
Also, Gombe United FC have lost in all their previous seven visits to Akwa Ibom.
Tickets for the game will be sold on matchday at the Eket Stadium. Fans will pay five hundred naira for popular stand, one thousand naira for VIP and five thousand naira for State box seats.
For visiting Gombe United FC, a perfect home record sees them sit in fourth spot on the NPFL standings with nine points from five matches.
The Savannah Scorpions have lost both away games this season, falling in the Southwest vs Sporting Lagos FC and Shooting Stars Sports Club.
In their last game, Coach Baba Ganaru tutored Gombe United FC defeated Plateau United FC 1-0 courtesy of a Sadiq Shuaibu spot-kick at the Pantami Stadium.
