NPFL hammer falls on Enyimba and Rangers following Oriental derby chaos
There was late drama at the 20,000-capacity Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on Sunday when Rangers were awarded a penalty in the 98th minute after striker Godwin Obaje broke free on goal, only to be brought down by Enyimba’s Pascal Eze.
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has taken strong action against Enyimba and Rangers following their chaotic Matchday 35 encounter in Enugu.
The controversial penalty decision by the referee led to a dramatic turn of events. Enyimba fans invaded the pitch, and players from the Aba-based club refused to continue, resulting in the game’s abandonment.
Penalties Imposed by NPFL
The NPFL has awarded three points and three goals to Rangers, while Enyimba has been fined N10 million for breaching league regulations.
Rangers Fined for Security Lapses
Rangers have also been fined N5 million for security lapses, allowing fans onto the pitch, and selling more tickets than the stadium’s capacity.
With this ruling, Rangers maintain their top spot with 64 points from 35 matches. Enyimba and Remo Stars are tied for second, with 59 points each.
Both clubs have 48 hours to challenge the league body’s decision.
