The 2020/21 NPFL season commenced with much pomp and pageantry on Sunday 27th of December 2020 with 6 matches holding simultaneously in different venues across the country.

The first goal of the season was scored by Wikki Tourist man, Promise Damala in the 5th minute of their away fixture at Nasarawa United. Reuben Nicodemus scored the first brace of the season as Nasarawa United came back from the early setback and secured a 2-1 victory to pick up 3 points.

Ifeanyi Ubah came out on top against Lobi Stars in a hotly contested encounter, which was decided by a 47th minute goal by Nonso Nzediugwu. Lobi Stars had to return to Makurdi empty-handed.

Kwara United stunned Plateau United in Jos to secure the first away win of the season, with 2 quickfire second half goals from Jide Fatokun and Michael Ohanu within 5 minutes of each other.

MFM FC ensured that Warri Wolves returned to Warri empty-handed from the Soccer Temple, after goals from Ebenezer Odeyemi and John Chinedu. Muyiwa Balogun scored a consolation goal for the Wolves.

Jigawa Golden Stars opened their season with a lone goal victory over Sunshine Stars at their adopted home in Kaduna. Emeka Onukwube’s 76th minute goal was enough to secure the three points.

Club captain and legend, Rabiu Ali opened the scoring for Kano Pillars in their game against Adamawa United in Gombe. Ali’s first half goal put him in the history books, as it ensured that he has now scored in each of the last 10 NPFL seasons. An unfortunate own goal in the second half however ensured the spoils were shared.
