NPFL: Yobe Desert Stars Officially Becomes First Team To Be Relegated

Yobe Desert Stars have officially become the first club side to be relegated from the 2019 Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL Season.
The Damaturu based side knew a win in Uyo at Akwa Utd would keep them in the top flight for at least another matchday, got their day off to a sad note, when Sunday Robert’s pass was heading towards goalkeeper, Terkaa Melai. Godspower Aniefiok popped up and robbed him of the ball to square home with just 15 seconds into the game.
The result hands Akwa United a six-point advantage in Group B with three games to play, while Yobe Stars are relegated considering as things stand.
With four teams to be relegated in each group, the Damaturu side can’t beat the drop, even if they secure all nine points in the remaining three games, which will take them to 24 points, one behind ninth place Go Round FC, who currently have 25.
With promotion gained in 2017, Yobe Desert Stars spent two seasons in the top flight and will now return to the lower league, the Nigeria Nationwide League, NNL.
