Remo Stars and Enyimba kicked off their NPFL23 Super Six campaign with thrilling 2-2 draw at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos. Following a scoreless first half, the match came into life in the second half when teenage star Adiele Eriugo scored his first-ever goal for Enyimba. Remo Stars found an equaliser through experienced striker Junior Lokosa, who scored with his first touch of the game in the 77th minute. The People’s Elephant retook the lead from the penalty spot through the league’s leading marksman Chukwuemeka Obioma before the Sky Blue Stars’ captain Junior Nduka equalised in the 90th minute with a free-kick.
Rivers United picked up the first win of the NPFL23 Super Six tournament when they overcame Sunshine Stars 1-0 in the day’s second match at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena. After a drab first half, the game was decided shortly after the hour mark from the penalty spot by Super Eagles left-back Ebube Duru.
Bendel Insurance were held to a goalless draw by Lobi Stars in the day’s final match at the Mobolaji Johnson Stadium as both sides settled for one point apiece after a heated contest.
The first round of matches ended with champions Rivers United atop the standings with three points and four teams on a point each, and Sunshine Stars bottom of the pile following their defeat.
