NPFL24 Matchday Five: Rangers go top as Sporting Lagos return to winning ways
Rivers United, Katsina United, 3SC, Gombe United all win
Rangers climbed to the top of the NPFL24 standings after their 4-1 Matchday Five thrashing of Kano Pillars in Awka. Sai Masu Gida went ahead through Muhammad Yakubu before Godwin Obaje equalised for Rangers from the penalty spot. Goals from Saviour Isaac and a Chukwudi Nwaodu brace sealed the points for Fidelis Ilechukwu’s Flying Antelopes.
Sporting Lagos picked up their first win since Matchday One as they defeated Niger Tornadoes 2-1 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos. Jonathan Alukwu and Junior Lokosa put the Tech Boys in front before Bala Yahuza scored to halve the deficit in the second half.
Rivers United picked up a narrow 1-0 win over Lobi Stars to return to winning ways in their NPFL24 Matchday Five fixture. Alex Oyowah scored the game’s only goal to hand the Pride of Rivers all three points.
Katsina United picked up a hard-fought 3-2 win over Sunshine Stars at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium. Michael Olalusi gave the away side the lead before Michael Ibe equalised for Katsina United in the 44th minute. A minute later, Olalusi restored Sunshine Stars’ advantage from the penalty spot before a second half brace from Lukman Bello gave the Changi Boys all three points at home.
Bayelsa United picked up an impressive 2-1 win over Kwara United in their NPFL24 Matchday Five clash. Robert Mizo scored a brace to take his tally to five for the season, and Samuel Ayanrinde scored once for Kwara United.
Shooting Stars continued their impressive start to the season as they went joint-top after a 3-1 home win over Doma United. Nelson Abiam scored the opener for Doma United before the home side responded through Gbolagade Adelowo, Ademola Ayinde and Gideon Monday.
Abia Warriors claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Oriental rivals Heartland in their derby clash. Meme Okike scored the game’s only goal after eight minutes in Umuahia.
Akwa United remain winless this season after their NPFL24 Matchday Five draw against Insurance in Benin City.
Gombe United narrowly defeated Plateau United 1-0 at the Pantami Stadium in their NPFL24 Matchday Five meeting. Sadiq Shuaibu scored late in the game to seal all three points for the Savannah Scorpions.
