NPFL24: Rivers United defeat Remo Stars in rescheduled clash
2022 champions Rivers United claimed a convincing 2-0 win over Remo Stars in their rescheduled NPFL24 Matchday One clash in Port Harcourt. The Pride of Rivers excelled in the clash of two of the league’s best sides, a first major test.
Having fallen to defeat at the hands of Niger Tornadoes in Kaduna at the weekend, Rivers United were keen to get their season back on track against the side that finished above them on goal difference last season. Remo Stars won their first match of the season against Rangers and were looking for a second win.
Rivers United needed only 15 minutes of action at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium to find the opener. Former Bayelsa United midfielder Alex Oyowah continued his fine form since joining the side by stroking home a penalty, adding to his brace in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Remo Stars pushed for an equaliser but found no way past the resolute home backline. The Sky Blue Stars shot themselves in the foot at the death when a loose pass out of defence was pounced upon by their former striker Andy Okpe. The lanky striker fired an absolute rocket from 25 yards to score his first goal for the Pride of Rivers in the 90th minute.
Rivers United exacted revenge on the Sky Blue Stars, who took their place in the qualifiers for the CAF Champions League this season. For the visitors, they will be keen to bounce back immediately when they visit Yenagoa at the weekend.
