Nwakaeme pivotal as Trabzonspor emerge victorious in Turkish Super Cup
Compatriot Okechukwu on the losing side
Nigerian attacker, Anthony Nwakaeme continued his impressive form for Trabzonspor this season as he helped them defeat Azubuike Okechukwu’s Istanbul Basaksehir 2-1 in the Turkish Super Cup match. It was Nwakaeme’s second trophy at Trabzonspor, following up his Turkish Cup triumph last season.
Trabzonspor took the lead through Djaniny before a Demba Ba penalty restored parity for the league champions. It took a late strike from Caleb Ekuban to ensure that the trophy was going to be Trabzonspor’s. Nwakaeme could not add to his 5 goals and 4 assists this season, but put on an all-action display in the game. He had 84 touches of the ball, attempted 6 shots, won 9 duels and completed 4 dribbles, leading his team in all categories.
The 31 year old winger shared the pitch with his countryman, 23 year old Azubuike Okechukwu who was in the Basaksehir midfield on the night before being substituted in the 55th minute. It was Okechukwu’s 7th appearance of the season for his club. Basaksehir finished the game with 10 men after Alexandru Epureanu was given his marching orders.
