NWFL Championship heads to Cross River State
Cross River State has been chosen to host the 2023/2024 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship. The second-tier competition will run from August 31 to September 8, 2024, in Calabar.
The NWFL Championship will feature over 17 clubs divided into four groups. The format includes a group stage with six matchdays, followed by final matches that will decide which teams are promoted and which are relegated. The top two teams will move up to the NWFL Premiership, while the bottom two will be relegated.
The draws and pre-match meetings for the championship are scheduled for August 29, the day after the clubs arrive in Cross River State.
The announcement follows the successful NWFL Premiership Super Six finals held in Bayelsa State, where Edo Queens emerged victorious.
Edo Queens, who recently claimed their first-ever NWFL Premiership title, were celebrated in a grand style with a N42.5 million gift from the Edo Governor. The team, which includes Peace Abbey, noted for being the most beautiful female footballer in the NWFL, clinched the championship after a crucial win and depended on the outcome of the match between Rivers Angels and Heartland Queens.
Sunshine Queens and Royal Queens have been relegated from the Premiership and will compete in the Championship next season.
