Odion Ighalo reveals what will make the NPFL attractive to him and other Nigerian stars
Former Manchester United forward Odion Ighalo has revealed what must be done to make the Nigeria Professional Football League – NPFL attractive to him and other Nigerian foreign based soocer stars.
Ighalo will not rule out the possibility of returning to play in the Nigerian league at some point in his career but a lot must change if that must happen.
The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations highest goal-scorer award winner made this revealation in a chat with SuperSports from his base in Saudi Arabia.
” The League (Nigerian Premier Football League) must be well organized. A lot of money will be pumped into the game and matches should be on television,” Ighalo said.
Like South Americans do, there has been calls for Nigeria’s big stars to return home to play in the Nigeria Professional Football League before hanging up their careers.
To have the likes of Ighalo, Mikel Obi, others in the NPFL will definitely boost the commercial value of the League but this calls will fall flat because of this issues raised by the Al Hilal forward.
Another concern raised by Ighalo as to why Nigerian soccer stars find it difficult to turn out for NPFL clubs before hanging up was insecurity.
Ahmed Musa during his brief stint at Kano Pillars did not play in games that will require long road trips.
According to Ighalo, despite the commitment towards helping the NPFL grow, the foreign based players will have to consider their safety first.
Ighalo had previously played for defunct Julius Berger before his move abroad.
