Okocha and Kanu praise Lookman’s dedication after CAF Award win

Ademola Lookman’s triumph at the 2024 CAF Footballer of the Year awards has earned high praise from two of Nigeria’s greatest football legends, Austin Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu. The Atalanta forward, who had a standout year with both his club and the Nigerian national team, was named Africa’s best player during the ceremony in Marrakesh, Morocco.

Lookman claimed the prestigious award, defeating tough competition from stars like PSG’s Achraf Hakimi, Brighton’s Simon Adingra, and Borussia Dortmund’s Serhou Guirassy. The recognition came after an impressive year, where Lookman played a key role in Atalanta’s UEFA Europa League victory and helped Nigeria finish as runners-up in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Okocha, speaking on Soccer TV’s YouTube channel, highlighted Lookman’s character as a key factor in his success. “The CAF Award is not just about how well you play on the pitch,” he said. “Your attitude on the pitch, your interactions with players, and your reactions to coaches are all tested before we even talk about tactical performances.”

Okocha, who is known for his skillful play, called Lookman “an epitome of good sportsmanship and a perfect gentleman.” He added, “For Ademola Lookman to be awarded African Best Player of the Year, it simply means he has been examined on all these criteria and passed.”

Kanu, a two-time Africa Player of the Year, also praised Lookman’s dedication. “Your dedication and commitment to both national and club sides earned you this achievement,” Kanu said in a message to Lookman. “I am personally proud of you. This award will inspire the younger generation to strive and not be discouraged by challenges.”

Lookman’s 2023 and 2024 performances have been nothing short of remarkable. From his hat-trick in the Europa League final to his goals for Nigeria in the AFCON, Lookman has proven himself as one of Africa’s brightest talents.
