Okocha Backs Super Eagles to Qualify for 2026 World Cup

Former Super Eagles captain, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, has backed the national team to bounce back and qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Despite a slow start to their qualifying campaign, Okocha believes the Super Eagles still have what it takes to reach the tournament.

Nigeria are currently fourth in their group, six points behind leaders South Africa, after drawing 1-1 at home against Zimbabwe. This came after an earlier win away to Rwanda under new head coach Eric Chelle.

“We Must Win All Remaining Games” – Okocha

Speaking in an interview with iDiski Times, Okocha, who played at three World Cups for Nigeria, said the team must now win all their remaining matches to stand a chance.

“If we want to give ourselves any chance of qualifying, we have to be thinking of winning all our remaining matches,” said the former PSG star.

“Of course, Bafana Bafana are top of the group, and it will be a difficult game to play, but we still believe we can go there and win.”

“If we want to qualify, those are the games we need to win. I believe we can win there, but it won’t be easy,” Okocha added.

Road to Qualification Continues in September

The Super Eagles will continue their 2026 World Cup qualifiers in September. They will first play Rwanda at home on the 1st of September before travelling to face South Africa a week later.

Nigeria are hoping to return to the World Cup after missing out on the 2022 edition in Qatar.
