Okocha questions Qatar World Cup preparations after opening day loss to Ecuador
Former Super Eagles captain turned Pundit Austin Jay Jay Okocha has questioned Qatar following their lacklustre performance in the 2-0 loss to Ecuador in the opening game of the World Cup.
Ahead of the game, no host nation had ever lost the opening game at the FIFA World Cup but that record fell flat as Qatar fell flat in front of their own crowd.
Enner Valencia scored both goals to secure victory for Ecuador in front of a packed crowd at the Al Bayt Stadium in Doha on Sunday evening.
Okocha who is working as a pundit for expressed his dissapointment over the performance of the host nation who reportedly spent six months in camp ahead of the World Cup.
” I cannot imagine what they (Qatar) have been doing in camp for the last six months, ” Okocha said while analysing the first half performance by Qatar.
For most parts of the opening half, Qatar failed to string passes together not to talk of creating chances in a much anticipated encounter.
Despite the loss, home fans did not show any signs of dissapointment as they danced around, just maybe the thoughts of hosting football’s biggest event is enough for Qatar.
If they must get points at the World Cup, Qatar will have to step up significantly against Netherlands and Senegal their other Group A opponents.
