Ola Aina and Nottingham Forest Face Tough Balancing Act Despite Europa League Progress

Nigerian defender Ola Aina and his Nottingham Forest teammates are enjoying the moment after reaching the Europa League semi-finals, but their situation in the Premier League means the weeks ahead could be very challenging.

Forest secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over FC to progress 2-1 on aggregate, booking a semi-final clash with Aston Villa. It will be their first European semi-final in over four decades.

The winner of that tie will advance to the final in Istanbul, where they will face either SC Freiburg or SC Braga. Lifting the trophy would also guarantee a place in next season’s Champions League.

However, before turning full attention to Europe, Forest must deal with crucial league matches against Burnley and Sunderland. Poor results could see them slip into the relegation zone, even as they prepare for a major European tie.

Despite being on their longest unbeaten run of the season, there is still a real risk they could be fighting relegation while chasing European glory.

At the start of the campaign, winning the Europa League was one of the club’s ambitions after heavy spending on new players. The aim was to improve on last season’s seventh-place finish, where they narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification.

The season has been far from stable, with several managerial changes before Vitor Pereira took charge. Even so, the dream of European success is still alive.

A former England international believes Forest can achieve both survival and European success, describing this period as a possible turning point.

Still, the main focus remains staying in the Premier League. Pereira has made it clear that avoiding relegation is the club’s top priority, even as they continue their European journey.

Forest have already had a busy run of matches and must carefully manage their squad to cope with both competitions. The manager has rotated his team at times to keep players fresh for important league games.

Looking ahead, the challenge could become even greater. If Forest were to win the Europa League but get relegated, they would face the unusual situation of playing in the Championship while competing in the Champions League.

With a packed schedule and little room for rest, balancing both competitions would be extremely difficult and could stretch the squad to its limits.

For now, Forest remain focused on the immediate task — securing their Premier League status while keeping their European dream alive.
