Manchester United inflicted a surprise 2-0 defeat on in-form Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday in the Premier League to return to second place on the EPL table.
Manchester United took an early lead after just 2 minutes when their Portuguese Magnifico Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot after Anthony Martial was fouled. The Portuguese star now has 41 goal contributions in 42 premier league appearances for the Red Devils since his move from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020. Manchester City continued to probe patiently after going behind, but were unable to find an opening until the end of the first half. A lightning quick break that started with a quick throw out by Manchester United goalkeeper, Dean Henderson ended with left back, Luke Shaw drilling a fine shot across Ederson in the Manchester City goal and into the bottom left corner of the net to make it 2-0 to the visitors and end Manchester City’s 21 game winning run.
Manchester United have now gone 22 away matches unbeaten, only one shy of Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal’s record of 23 unbeaten away games. They have opened up a 9 point gap from 5th placed West Ham United as they look set to secure Champions League football again this season. City still have a lead of 11 points over their nearest rivals, Manchester United and would be keen to show that this was just a one-off result.
