Oliseh backs Maduka Okoye over 2025 AFCON decision

Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has spoken about Maduka Okoye’s absence from Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 squad. Oliseh said he understands why the Udinese goalkeeper would choose not to go to the tournament if he was not sure of playing.

Nigeria coach Eric Chelle first named a large provisional squad, which included Okoye. But when the final list was released, Okoye was missing. Reports later claimed the goalkeeper decided not to attend AFCON because he was not guaranteed the starting role.

Speaking on his Global Football Show, Oliseh said goalkeepers are different from outfield players and must know their role before a tournament begins. He explained that a goalkeeper needs clear assurance about whether he will play or sit on the bench.

Oliseh also reminded fans how badly Okoye was criticised after his last matches for Nigeria. He said the abuse was so strong that it could have ended the player’s career. According to him, Okoye has now rebuilt his form at Udinese and is doing well again.

Oliseh warned that going to AFCON without playing could harm Okoye’s club career. He said leaving his club during the season and then sitting on the bench for Nigeria could cost him his place at Udinese. When he returns, another goalkeeper might already have taken his spot.

For this reason, Oliseh said he would understand if Okoye chose not to come. He added that calling the decision “unpatriotic” is unfair, as players are not slaves and must also protect their careers.

Meanwhile, Okoye has stayed focused at club level and recently helped Udinese keep a clean sheet in a win against Napoli.
