Oliseh Pays Emotional Tribute to Late Legend Christian Chukwu
Former Super Eagles captain and coach, Sunday Oliseh, has paid a touching tribute to Christian Chukwu, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 74 in Enugu.
Oliseh described the late football icon as a “true legend” and someone he deeply admired throughout his career. Chukwu, fondly called “Chairman,” was Nigeria’s captain when the country won its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 1980. He later went on to manage the Super Eagles, leading them to a third-place finish at the 2004 AFCON in Tunisia.
Reacting to the sad news, Oliseh shared his feelings on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He wrote:
“Sunny, wake up! Gbalamun don land! RIP Coach Christian Chukwu, a true legend.
Sadly, we’ve lost a man I deeply admired before, during, and after our Nigeria’s golden ’90s era.
The composed ‘Chairman’ guided Nigeria and the Super Eagles to glory. A beloved hero.
I strangely just kept hearing his voice all day after the heartbreaking news was broken to me.”
Chukwu’s death has left a deep mark on the Nigerian football community, with many mourning the loss of a man who played key roles both on and off the pitch.
Aside from leading Nigeria to glory, Chukwu also coached Enugu Rangers and managed the Kenyan national team, the Harambee Stars. His contribution to African football will be remembered for generations.
