Olympiacos Sign Bruno Onyemaechi from Boavista for €2.5 Million

Olympiacos have completed the signing of Nigerian defender Bruno Onyemaechi from Boavista for €2.5 million, subject to medical tests and paperwork.

The reigning Europa Conference League champions successfully beat off late competition from European giants Benfica and Fenerbahce for the 25-year-old defender.

The deal was reportedly finalised after a tense transfer battle with the Portuguese and Turkish clubs, as well as a few unnamed French teams.

Onyemaechi, who has 11 international caps for Nigeria, arrived in Athens on Thursday to undergo medical tests and sign a three-and-a-half-year contract with Olympiacos, Greek outlet Parapolitika reported.

The defender’s move ends a successful stint at Boavista, where he made 77 appearances, scoring five goals and providing four assists since joining in 2020.

Olympiacos secured Onyemaechi after agreeing terms with Boavista, who were reportedly keen on keeping a percentage of any future transfer profits.

However, the deal nearly fell through as Benfica and Fenerbahce made last-minute bids to hijack the transfer, with Trabzonspor also showing interest earlier in the window.

Onyemaechi’s stock rose after an impressive season at Boavista, where he played in all 18 league matches, contributing three goals and one assist.

Known for his pace, strength, and versatility, Onyemaechi can play across the left side of defence, making him a valuable addition for Olympiacos as they look to strengthen their backline.

He was also an important member of Nigeria’s squad that reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

This transfer is expected to provide a much-needed financial boost for Boavista, who are facing FIFA restrictions and are looking to reinforce their squad during the winter transfer window. However, Onyemaechi’s departure leaves a gap in their defence as they prepare for their next match against Braga.

For Olympiacos, Onyemaechi’s arrival strengthens their squad as they push for success both domestically and in Europe. The Greek club, currently competing in the Europa League, sees the Nigerian as a long-term solution to their defensive needs. The deal is expected to be officially confirmed within the next 24 hours.
