Onana: Arsenal and Chelsea Wanted to Sign Me Before Man United Move
Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has revealed that Arsenal and Chelsea were interested in signing him before he joined the Red Devils.
Onana moved to Man United in July 2023 for £47.2 million after spending a season at Inter Milan.
Before his time in Italy, the Cameroon international played for Ajax, where he won three Eredivisie titles in six seasons. He later joined Inter Milan on a free transfer.
Speaking about clubs that wanted to sign him in the past, Onana confirmed Arsenal and Chelsea had shown interest.
When asked about the teams he nearly joined while at Ajax, he told Le Média Carré: “I had Monaco, I had Nice, I had Atlético Madrid, I had Chelsea, Arsenal.”
However, when asked which club came closest to signing him, Onana said: “Lyon. I spoke with the president and the technical director, so it was advanced anyway.
“It was difficult for me to speak with the president because I had decided to learn Italian.”
