Onuachu Scores Third Goal of the Season in Southampton Defeat to Wolves
Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu found the back of the net again for Southampton, scoring his third goal of the season in their 2-1 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
Onuachu, who was recently left out of Nigeria’s final 23-man squad for this month’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, came off the bench in the 75th minute and made an immediate impact. The 30-year-old striker pounced on a rebound to slot home Southampton’s only goal of the game, offering a glimmer of hope that ultimately proved to be a consolation.
Wolves had already taken a comfortable 2-0 lead before Onuachu’s introduction, leaving Southampton with too much to do in the closing stages at St. Mary’s Stadium. The loss keeps the ‘Saints’ rooted at the bottom of the Premier League table, 17 points from safety with just nine matches left to play—making relegation to the Championship seem almost inevitable.
Speaking after the match, Onuachu admitted the goal felt bittersweet given the result. “It’s difficult scoring my first goal in front of the [home] fans and we’re losing. It’s not good enough and we need to do better as a team and individually,” he told the club’s official website.
“We had a good start in the first 20 minutes but it’s difficult to explain this loss because we’re playing on our home ground and we had the feeling we were going to beat Wolves,” he added. “You could see we were the better team, even though we lost. It’s just not good enough.”
Despite his limited playing time this season, Onuachu has now registered three goals in 17 league appearances for the South Coast club.
Southampton will hope their Nigerian forward can deliver more goals as they attempt to salvage their season in the final weeks of the campaign.
