Striker scores brace on third Galatasaray debut
Nigerian forward, Henry Onyekuru scored a second half brace for Galatasaray in their 2-1 win away at Gaziantep FK in the Turkish Super Lig. The 23 year old striker returned on loan to Galatasaray last week from French Municipality club, AS Monaco having not played a minute of football since September 2020.
He was introduced off the bench for his third debut at half time as a replacement for Younes Belhanda, and 6 minutes later, he calmly slotted past the keeper from inside the box after he was found by Ryan Babel to make it 1-0. In the 78th minute, his run in behind was spotted by Muhammed Akturkoglu with an inch perfect pass which he neatly prodded past the onrushing goalkeeper for his second of the night. Gaziantep pulled one back from the penalty spot in added time through Alexandru Maxim, but it was to be the Onyekuru show as Galatasaray ran out 2-1 winners. Nigerian midfielder, Oghenekaro Etebo also made an appearance off the bench in the 75th minute for Galatasaray.
Onyekuru made his Galatasaray move to secure more playing time and thrust himself back into Super Eagles contention, and he could not have dreamed of a better start. He has not been a part of the Super Eagles set up since 2019. He has been widely touted as a future Super Eagles star.
