Osayi-Samuel Hails Reece James as Super Eagles Prepare for Mozambique Clash

Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel has named Chelsea and England full-back Reece James as his role model, praising the defender’s all-round qualities.

Reece James played a key role in Chelsea’s 2025 FIFA Club World Cup campaign after returning from a long spell out injured. The right-back had missed many matches between 2023 and 2025 due to recurring hamstring problems before making a strong comeback.

Osayi-Samuel, who has become Nigeria’s first-choice right-back at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, said James stands out because of his ability to both defend and attack. The Nigerian international stepped into the role after Ola Aina suffered a hamstring injury, while young defender Benjamin Frederick is sidelined with a knee problem.

The Birmingham City full-back featured in two of Nigeria’s group-stage matches before Ryan Alebiosu made his debut in the final group game against Uganda.

Speaking about his inspirations, Osayi-Samuel said Reece James has the complete skill set required of a modern full-back.

“He has everything. He can defend, attack, and even play in midfield. He is the full package,” he said. Osayi-Samuel also mentioned former Barcelona star Dani Alves as another player he admired while growing up, particularly for his link-up play with attackers.

The defender also spoke about his time playing in Turkey, describing the rivalries as extremely intense. He said the passion and division between clubs made everyday interactions difficult, especially between players from rival teams.

Osayi-Samuel added that the level of support he received at Fenerbahce was special and described the club as one of the biggest in the country.

Nigeria will face Mozambique in the Round of 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday. The match will take place at the Complexe de Fes, with kick-off scheduled for 8:00 pm Nigerian time.
