Osayi-Samuel reveals the reason for his altercation with Trabzonspor fans
Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Fenerbahce defender, Bright Osayi-Samuel, has spoken out about the incident involving Trabzonspor fans, shedding light on his actions in the face of adversity.
Following a Super Lig match, Osayi-Samuel found himself in a heated confrontation with Trabzonspor fans who had attacked his Fenerbache teammates.
The defender’s response made headlines, prompting him to provide his perspective on the situation.
In his statement, Osayi-Samuel emphasised that his actions were rooted in self-defense. He highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that some fans had entered the field wielding weapons.
The defender expressed his astonishment at the events that unfolded on the football field, stressing the need to protect his teammates and friends amidst the chaos.
Osayi for the first time opened up on the situation on Monday and explained his side of the story.
Some people say what I did was not self-defence. If someone comes at you with a knife in his hand, how can this not be self-defence? They came to the field from the stands,” he was quoted by Bein Sports.
“I only had to defend my team and my friends there. Many of my teammates were coming into the locker room with cuts and bruises.
” I cannot understand how such events are possible on a football field.”
Bright Osayi-Samuel’s remarks underscore the challenges faced by athletes in confronting hostile environments and the importance of ensuring safety and security in football settings.
The Nigerian player will be in action on Tuesday when the Super Eagles face Mali on Tuesday.
