Oshoala shines with early Goal against former club Barcelona
Asisat Oshoala netted a goal for Bay FC in a 5-2 loss to Barcelona during a highly anticipated international friendly at PayPal Park on Tuesday, marking her first match against her former club since leaving in February.
Facing her former club for the first time since her departure in February, the 29-year-old Super Falcons star gave Bay FC an early lead.
Her goal came just 17 minutes into the game, electrifying the 14,187 fans in attendance. Bay FC wasted no time celebrating her strike, sharing on Instagram, “It had to be Oshoala to score first against her former team.”
Oshoala pounced on a misplaced pass from the Barcelona goalkeeper near the box, drilling a shot into the bottom left corner.
However, Barcelona quickly responded, equalizing in the 21st minute. Ewa Pajor’s run down the right side set up Kika Nazareth, who slotted home a precise strike from the edge of the box.
Bay FC used 21 players during the match, with Oshoala subbed out at halftime for Anderson. Oshoala’s scoring instincts were on full display, reminiscent of her time at Barcelona, where she racked up an impressive 85 goals in 101 appearances, collecting numerous trophies and individual accolades.
The Nigeria international, who has also played for Liverpool and Arsenal, will now turn her attention to Bay FC’s upcoming road match against Portland Thorns FC at Providence Park on Friday, where she is expected to be a key player.
Despite the loss, the match ended on a positive note, with Barcelona players embracing Oshoala at the final whistle.
