Oshoala Voices Concern Over Bay FC Investigation and Player Welfare in NWSL

Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala has spoken out about her concerns following the ongoing investigation into the coaching staff at her American club, Bay FC.

The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) is currently carrying out an independent investigation into claims of a toxic working environment under Bay FC head coach Albertin Montoya. The probe began after reports emerged from former players and staff describing the club’s atmosphere during its first season as unhealthy and stressful.

The NWSL confirmed that the investigation, being handled by an independent party, will look into how the coaching staff communicates with players and will take necessary actions based on the outcome.

Bay FC has acknowledged the investigation and says it is working with the league to ensure player safety and satisfaction.

Concerns raised by former players include accusations that Montoya singled out and bullied players during team meetings. One ex-player said, “We begged and pleaded for help and change, and it never came.”

A recent NWSL player satisfaction survey ranked Bay FC 11th out of 14 clubs, with many players asking for clearer communication and transparency from the coaching staff.

In response, Bay FC said, “We take all feedback seriously. We were founded as a player-focused club, and we will do all we can to ensure a supportive environment for our players.”

Asisat Oshoala, who joined Bay FC from Barcelona in 2024 and has scored 8 goals in 30 matches, expressed her disappointment in a post on social media.

“Waking up and feeling reluctant to show up to work because of a protected somebody is draining,” she said.

She added, “How can people be needing mental support every year? It scares me… by the end of the year, it might be psychiatrist support.”

Oshoala’s comments highlight the growing concern over player welfare in women’s football and the need for better support systems within clubs.
