Osimhen Downplays Heroics, Praises Team Effort in Nigeria’s Win Over Algeria

Victor Osimhen has credited Nigeria’s 2–0 Africa Cup of Nations 2025 quarterfinals victory over Algeria to team effort rather than his individual performance.

The Super Eagles striker was named Man of the Match after scoring one goal and providing an assist, but he insisted that Nigeria’s success was built on collective play.

“I scored a goal and provided an assist, but we shouldn’t focus on my personal performance; we should focus on the team effort of the national team,” Osimhen said after the match. “We won against a good Algerian team that has talented players.”

He explained that his performance was shaped by lessons from previous AFCON campaigns. “It’s not just about scoring decisive goals, but about how we influence the game and contribute to the victory—that’s what matters most in the national team,” he said.

Osimhen also emphasised his commitment to continuous improvement. “I always strive to improve myself, both mentally and physically,” he added.

Nigeria’s composed display in the quarterfinal highlighted their growing confidence and cohesion. With Osimhen leading the line, the Super Eagles are now focused on collective ambition as they prepare for the AFCON semifinal.
