Osimhen respects Super Eagles coach decision on penalty taker
Nigeria’s superstar striker, Victor Osimhen, has expressed his respect for coach Jose Peseiro’s decision to let William Troost-Ekong take the penalty kick in their recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) match against Ivory Coast.
Despite being fouled and winning the penalty, Osimhen did not take the spot kick as the captain, Troost-Ekong, stepped up to convert it and give Nigeria the lead.
In the post-match conference, Osimhen clarified that it was the coach’s decision and emphasized that what matters most to him is the success of the team.
He said ” “It was the coach. He wanted me to take it but I have to respect it, he’s the captain. For me, I really don’t mind who takes the penalty or who scores for the team. I want the team to win. I want the team to progress so this is the most important thing for me.”
Osimhen has been a key player for the Super Eagles, contributing significantly to their performances in the AFCON tournament with a goal vs Equatorial Guinea and a Man of the match in the last game.
With his focus on helping Nigeria reach the pinnacle of the AFCON, Osimhen’s commitment to the team’s success remains unwavering amidst personal ambition to finish as tournament top-scorer.
