Osimhen Undergoes Treatment for Ankle Sprain After Injury with Nigeria

Galatasaray’s team doctor, Dr Yener Slim, has confirmed that Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen suffered an ankle sprain during the 1-0 win over Rwanda in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Saturday.
Osimhen was taken off halfway through the first half after a challenge from Claude Niyomugabo in Uyo. This injury ruled him out of Nigeria’s next important match against South Africa on Tuesday.
At first, Nigeria’s team doctors said Osimhen had only a bruise on his shin.
“The team doctor confirmed Victor Osimhen’s injury is a bruise on his shin. He woke up on Sunday feeling discomfort and will not travel with the team to South Africa,” said Super Eagles Media Officer, Promise Efoghe.
Further Tests and Treatment in Turkey
Osimhen returned to Turkey, where Galatasaray carried out more detailed tests.
“Examinations on Tuesday showed a moderate sprain in Osimhen’s ankle ligaments, with some tension and bleeding,” Dr Slim said.
“We have started the necessary treatment to help him recover and return to the pitch as soon as possible.”
Next Steps
It is not yet clear if Osimhen will be fit to play for Galatasaray in their league game against Eyüpspor on Saturday.
Osimhen joined Galatasaray permanently from Napoli this summer after a successful loan. The €75 million deal made him the club’s record signing. He has scored two goals in three league games so far this season, helping the team lead the league with 12 points.
