Oyo State Declares Readiness to Host Super Eagles, Challenges Uyo

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has announced that his state is ready to compete with Uyo to host the Super Eagles’ home matches.

The national team currently plays its home games at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. But Makinde said his administration is prepared to provide the facilities and support needed to bring the team to the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.

Speaking on Saturday while opening the 81st Annual General Assembly of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in Ibadan, Makinde assured that the state would invest in any improvements required at the Lekan Salami Stadium.

“We are ready in Oyo State to host the Super Eagles. Let us assess the facilities at the Lekan Salami Stadium and see what needs to be improved. I give you my word, we will invest the needed resources,” Makinde said.

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau welcomed the governor’s commitment and promised that a Super Eagles match would be played in Oyo State before the end of the current administration in 2027.

“We appreciate your contributions to football and sports. I assure you that before 2027, a Nigerian national team match will be hosted here in recognition of your consistent support,” Gusau stated.

The governor also suggested a single-term tenure for sports administrators in Nigeria, arguing that it would promote accountability, stability and stronger performance in sports governance.

The Ibadan event attracted top football stakeholders, including former NFF President Amaju Pinnick, FIFA observers Hamed Haraz and Lyrique Dupiesis, FIFA representative Nadim Magdy, and WAFU Executive Director Philippe Tchere.
