Özil finally completes Fenerbahce transfer

After being frozen out by Arsenal boss, Arteta

German midfielder, Mesut Özil finally completed his transfer from Arsenal to Turkish giants, Fenerbahce. The Turkish-German midfielder joins the Turkish side on a free transfer after Arsenal chose to pay out the remainder of his contract. He had repeatedly stated that his dream was to one day play for Fenerbahce.

Özil, who joined Arsenal in 2013 from Real Madrid for an estimated fee of €45 Million was ostracized from the Arsenal squad by coach Mikel Arteta after the resumption of professional football following the first COVID lockdown in the UK. At the beginning of the 2020/21 season, he was excluded from the Arsenal squads for both the Premier League and Europa League, sparking claims that he was ripping the club off by earning 350,000 Pounds weekly to be kept out of the squad. He played his last match for Arsenal against West Ham on March 7 2020, and he provides the match-winning assist.

Özil, who is regarded as possibly the best playmaker of his generation joins Fenerbahce, his boyhood club after scoring 44 goals and making 77 assists in 254 games for Arsenal, winning 4 major trophies. He was part of the team that ended the Gunners’ 9 year trophy drought with the FA Cup in 2014. He also won the FIFA World Cup with the German national team in 2014. He leaves Arsenal hugely popular in North London, a cult hero.
