Paris Olympics: Eliminated Team Nigeria athletes as at August 2

The 2024 Paris Olympic Games have been a challenging journey for Team Nigeria, with several athletes and the Super Falcons seeing their campaigns cut short as at August 2.

Here’s a summary of the Nigerian competitors who have already been eliminated from the ongoing games:

Boxing

  • Cynthia Ogunsemilore faced a provisional suspension after testing positive for a banned substance, preventing her from competing in her opening fight.
  • Olaitan Olaore, Nigeria’s and Africa’s champion in the men’s 92kg category, was defeated 5-0 in his bout, marking an early exit for him.

Table Tennis

  • Quadri Aruna, the Nigerian and African Champion, was narrowly defeated 4-3 in the men’s singles category.
  • Omotayo Olajide also faced elimination, losing 4-1 in his opening round.
  • Offiong Edem and Fatimo Bello both fell short in the women’s singles, each losing 4-0 in their first-round matches.

Badminton

  • Anuoluwapo Juwon Opeyori was unable to advance after losing both of his group stage matches in the men’s singles.

Women’s Football

  • The Super Falcons had a disappointing tournament, finishing their Olympic campaign without securing any points. They lost all three of their group stage matches.

Swimming

  • Tobi Sijuade missed out on the semifinals of the men’s 50m freestyle, finishing 3rd in his heat with a time of 23.34 seconds.

Athletics – Women’s 100m

  • Favour Ofili was controversially ruled out of the women’s 100m event due to a registration oversight by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), despite having qualified.
  • Godbless, another contender in the women’s 100m, did not progress beyond the heats, finishing 6th in Heat 7 with a time of 11.33 seconds.

High Jump

  • Temitope Adeshina failed to make it to the final of the women’s high jump, ending her campaign with a jump of 1.88m, which placed her 9th in Group B.

4/400 Mixed Relays

  • The mixed relay quartet of Samuel Ogazi, Ella Onojuvwevwo, Emmanuel Ojeli and Patience Okon George got edged in making the final after finishing 9th overall despite clocking a new National Record of 3:11.99.

Womens Discus

  • Amaechi, Anumba, Onyekwere miss out on the women’s Discus Throw final at the Paris Olympics.

Despite these setbacks, Team Nigeria’s athletes have shown remarkable resilience and determination. As the Games continue, the focus will now shift to supporting the remaining competitors and preparing for future international events.
