Patrick Dorgu chooses Denmark over Nigeria, scores on Debut

Nigeria has missed out on another promising dual-national talent, as Lecce full-back Patrick Chinaezepere Dorgu opted to represent Denmark over the Super Eagles. Dorgu, born in Denmark to a Nigerian father and a Swedish mother, was eligible to play for both Nigeria and Sweden but chose to represent the country of his birth.

Dorgu’s journey through Denmark’s youth teams has been remarkable, featuring for the U18, U19, U20, and U21 sides before earning his senior debut. His consistent performances for Lecce in Serie A convinced Denmark’s caretaker manager Lars Knudsen to call him up for their UEFA Nations League clash against Switzerland.

Dorgu made an instant impact in his debut, coming on as a substitute in the 81st minute with Denmark and Switzerland tied 0-0. Just a minute later, Dorgu scored his first goal for Denmark, breaking the deadlock with a well-timed finish after an assist from Andreas Skov Olsen.

Switzerland, already reduced to 10 men following Nico Elvedi’s red card, struggled to recover. Soon after Dorgu’s opener, their captain Granit Xhaka received a second yellow card, reducing them to nine players. Denmark capitalized, with Pierre-Emile Højbjerg adding a second goal to seal a 2-0 victory.

For Nigeria, Dorgu’s decision to choose Denmark is a significant blow, as the Super Eagles have lost out on another talented player who could have strengthened their squad. Dorgu’s early success with Denmark underscores the potential he brings, and he will be eager to continue impressing as Denmark faces Serbia in their next match of the international break.
