Paul Onuachu scores rare goal in Southampton’s defeat to Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest moved level on points with Arsenal in the Premier League after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Southampton. The win was their seventh unbeaten game in a row, pushing them six points behind Liverpool.
Forest capitalised on Arsenal’s slip-up earlier in the day, as the Gunners let a two-goal lead slip against Aston Villa. Nuno Espírito Santo’s side came into this match full of confidence after their recent performances, and they took control early.
The home side opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Morgan Gibbs-White played a perfectly timed pass to Elliot Anderson, who swiftly struck the ball past the goalkeeper at the near post.
Forest continued to dominate and added two more goals before half-time. Chris Wood was on target for their second, while Callum Hudson-Odoi extended the lead with a well-placed finish.
Southampton fought back after the break. Jan Bednarek pulled one back early in the second half, and then Paul Onuachu scored his first goal of the season, making it 3-2. Despite their efforts, Southampton couldn’t complete the comeback, and Forest held on for the win.
It was a rare goal for Onuachu, who had been struggling for form this season. His header sparked some hope for the Saints, but it wasn’t enough to take anything from the match.
Meanwhile, Nigerian stars, Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi were in action for Forest. Ola Aina played the entire game while Awoniyi came on as a second half substitute.
With the win, Forest remain in strong form and continue their push for a top-half finish. Meanwhile, Southampton will be looking to recover as they face another tough challenge in their fight against relegation.
