Pearce: Awoniyi is a Reliable Backup for Chris Wood

Former Manchester City defender Stuart Pearce has said that Taiwo Awoniyi is a strong backup option for Chris Wood at Nottingham Forest.

Awoniyi, who had a great season last year, has struggled with injuries, leading to limited playing time this season. His absence has allowed New Zealand striker Chris Wood to take his place in the team. Wood has been in excellent form, scoring nine goals in 14 starts this season.

Pearce praised Nottingham Forest’s counterattacking style and the depth of their attacking options. Speaking to Nottingham Post, he said:
“Their counterattack is very effective. They are the only team to win at Liverpool this season because of the threat they pose on the break.

“Chris Wood is scoring goals, which is fantastic for the club. He’s having a great period in his career. If he’s not fit, Taiwo Awoniyi, who did well last season, can step in. Forest has pace and two reliable goalscorers up front.”

Despite their strong attacking options, both Wood and Awoniyi failed to score in Forest’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City on Wednesday.

The team will now aim to bounce back when they face Manchester United on Saturday.
