Peseiro focused on AFCON amid salary controversy
Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro, says his commitment to improving the team’s performance, downplaying discussions about owed salaries amid reports of financial disputes with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Peseiro who assumed the coaching role two years ago, is currently with the team in Ivory Coast for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.
Despite reports of owed salary and news that President Tinubu has approved funds for it’s settlement, Peseiro remains focused on achieving positive results with the Super Eagles at the 34th AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.
In a statement ahead of the team’s AFCON opener against Equatorial Guinea, the Portuguese tactician expressed that his primary concern is the team’s performance and not financial matters.
“Money and bonuses should be the last discussion, we need good results first. We all need money, but money is the last discussion. I don’t discuss my salary and bonuses with the media,” Peseiro stated.
The coach’s tenure has faced challenges, including reports of salary owed during his previous coaching stint in Venezuela. However, Peseiro remains undeterred, emphasizing that his focus is on achieving success with the Super Eagles.
Peseiro’s contract with the NFF is set to expire in February, 2024, and the team’s performance at the AFCON will play a significant role in determining the coach’s future with the Super Eagles.
