Peseiro insists he wants to win the AFCON with Nigeria
Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro insists he wants to win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] with Nigeria in Ivory Coast. Sportsration reports.
Peseiro who has not had a rosy stint as head coach of the Nigeria national team is set to lead the three-time winners to the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria has not tasted AFCON glory since late Stephen Keshi led the team to victory in 2013.
The Portuguese coach, who took the helm last year, has remained steadfast in his goal of securing AFCON glory for Nigeria.
“My experience with the Nigerian national team is very good. Being part of African and Nigerian football is an interesting thing, and I cannot deny that,” said Peseiro as quoted by KORAPLUS.
“I told everyone that I wanted to win the Africa Cup of Nations from the first moment I signed the contract with the Nigerian national team, and we study our opponents well in order to win, and this is what we seek to achieve.”
While acknowledging the competitive field and the strength of other teams, Peseiro remains focused on guiding the Super Eagles to success. He anticipates formidable competition in the upcoming AFCON, recognizing the determination of all participating teams to clinch the title.
Ahead of the tournament which gets underway on January 13, 2024, Peseiro has selected a robust 25-man squad for Nigeria’s AFCON campaign.
