Peseiro is still Super Eagles Head Coach – NFF Technical Director
Despite the expiration of his contract on June 30, Jose Peseiro is still Head Coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria as confirmed by Nigeria Football Federation – NFF Technical Director Austin Eguavoen.
Peseiro signed a one-year contract when he was first appointed in charge of the Eagles in 2022 and is currently out of contract.
In reaction to a question by reporters on who is Head Coach of the Nigeria Men’s National team, Technical Director of the NFF, Austin Eguavoen confirmed the Portuguese gaffer is still in charge of the team.
Éguavoen said “At the moment he is in charge, we are discussing in-house and we are giving him conditions as well,”
“We are flexible, so it could be suitable for both sides and once we reach a common ground, why not?
“We would invite him and once we agree and we arrive at a common ground, we would be flexible and we also want him to be flexible with us.”
“Contract or no contract, he is a human being and he is still the coach of the national team as it is.
“Contract attached to whatever is not the issue for now, we will invite him as our present coach. We want to reach a common ground but if we can’t, we would also like to shake hands, ” the NFF Technical Director said.
Peseiro was in charge when the Super Eagles defeated Sierra Leone 2-3 in Monrovia to book a 2023 AFCON spot in June, days before his contract expired.
NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau had previously suggested Nigerians will decide Jose Peseiro’s future on the job, but as confirmed by Eguavoen, the NFF is looking forward to having the Portuguese manager in charge of the team for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast.
The Super Eagles next game is against Sao Tome and Principe in September to conclude the 2023 AFCON qualification round.
