Plateau United halt Nasarawa United NPFL unbeaten start
Move up to 5th on NPFL log
Plateau United hosted unbeaten leaders, Nasarawa United at the New Jos Stadium in the first match of Matchday 7 of the 2020/21 NPFL season. The Abdu Maikaba tutored boys emerged victorious, securing a 1-0 victory in the game.
Nasarawa United came into the game on the back of a strong start to the season in which they were the only unbeaten team in the league after 6 games. Plateau United started the game brightly, creating chances and forcing Nasarawa goalkeeper, Danlami Umar into a fine stop early on. It was in the first half however that the home side took the lead through their converted striker, Mohammed Zulkifilu who planted a firm header past Danlami in the Nasarawa goal. Nasarawa United huffed and puffed, trying to find a way back but their effective striking duo of Silas Nwankwo and Chinedu Ohanachom were stifled by the Plateau backline, well marshalled by their goalkeeper, Chinedu Anozie. The game ended 1-0 in favour of the home side.
The result ensures that Plateau United are now only three points behind the leaders, Nasarawa United after they started the season rather uncharacteristically in the drop zone. Since Chinedu Anozie made his return in Matchday 2, he has now kept 5 clean sheets in 6 games, putting him clear of every other keeper in the league. Anozie kept the most clean sheets in the 2019/20 season as well. Nasarawa United can be hauled down from the top spot now if any of the team’s directly below them were to win their Matchday 7 fixtures.
