Plumptre reveals Olympics dream, hints at Super Falcons return
Nigeria Women’s footballer Ashleigh Plumptre, who made a move to Saudi Arabia after the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, has expressed her desire to participate in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
Plumptre, 25, relocated to Saudi Arabia after the World Cup, having already signed with Al-Ittihad before the tournament. Despite receiving offers from several top clubs in Europe and America, she kept the news of her move low-key to maintain focus during the competition.
The versatile defender played a crucial role in helping the Super Falcons secure three clean sheets during the World Cup, although the team exited the tournament at the round-of-sixteen.
Since then, Plumptre has not made any appearances for the national team.
Now residing in Saudi Arabia and playing for Al-Ittihad, Plumptre sees participating in the Paris 2024 Olympics with Nigeria as the pinnacle of her career.
In an interview with Arab news, the England-born Nigerian expressed her dream, saying, “Yes, it would be the pinnacle of my career.
” It makes me smile just thinking about the Olympics. I love helping people, and the only thing I was interested in at school was human biology.
” I was just fascinated with the human body. My dream when I was younger was to be a doctor on an Olympic team because I love the Olympics.”
Reflecting on her World Cup experience, Plumptre described it as a “crazy, crazy experience” that she will always cherish. She expressed her desire to remember it for the rest of her life.
Nigeria faces a challenging task in the upcoming months as they confront Cameroon in a two-legged contest in February, aiming to qualify for the 2024 Olympics.
Plumptre’s aspirations for the Olympics align with her dedication to the sport and her desire to contribute to the success of the national team, this means, fans who have anxiously waited to see her wear the green white green shirt post-world cup, will expect her return soon with the Olympic games in view.
