Premier League confirms Red Card for Leif Davis was for endagering Saka’s safety

The Premier League has officially stated that Ipswich Town defender Leif Davis was sent off for “endangering the safety of an opponent” during his side’s defeat to Arsenal.

Davis received a straight red card from referee Chris Kavanagh after a dangerous challenge on Bukayo Saka, in which he raked his studs down the back of the Arsenal winger’s Achilles. Saka was left in visible pain and required several minutes of treatment before continuing.

The incident was reviewed by VAR, which upheld the referee’s decision. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Premier League wrote:
“The referee’s call of red card to Davis for serious foul play was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the challenge deemed to be endangering the safety of an opponent.”

At the time of the red card, Ipswich were already trailing 2-0, with goals from Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli putting Arsenal in control.

Former Arsenal defender Matt Upson, analysing the game for BBC Radio 5 Live, criticised Davis’ challenge, calling it “very poor” after reviewing the footage.

“I can totally understand the red card when you break down that tackle. It’s so intentional,” Upson said.

The dismissal further dented Ipswich’s chances in the match, and the Premier League’s backing of the decision highlights its firm stance on dangerous play.
