Qatar 2022: Bruno Fernandes brace fires Portugal past Uruguay into the last 16
Becomes the third nation to qualify for last 16
Two second-half goals from Bruno Fernandes helped Portugal secure a win against Uruguay and book a place in the last 16 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup with a game to spare.
The Manchester United talisman broke the deadlock in a tough Group H clash when his 54th-minute cross, which was aimed at Cristiano Ronaldo, nestled in the far corner.
Cristiano Ronaldo claimed the goal and thought he had his 118 international goals but the goal was later awarded to Fernandes as Ronaldo was adjudged to not have touched the ball.
Bruno Fernandes then scored the second goal with a stoppage-time penalty and almost had a hat-trick as Fernando Santos’ side joined France and Brazil in sealing their passage to the knockout stages with a game to spare.
The win saw Portugal avenge their 2-1 defeat by Uruguay in the last 16 of the 2018 competition in Russia.
While Portugal have booked a place in the last 16, there is still all to play for the other three nations who still have a mathematical chance of making it alongside Portugal.
Portugal play South Korea, and Ghana and Uruguay play in the other concluding fixture.
Here is what the table looks like going into the last group games.
Portugal 6 points
Ghana 3 points
Uruguay 1 point
South Korea 1 point
The Black Stars of Ghana only need to avoid defeat against Uruguay who must win to secure a place in the last 16.
