Rafael Nadal, the humble tennis legend from Mallorca, has shared that he would prefer his son to choose a sport other than tennis. Despite his incredible success on the court, Nadal, 38, says he no longer has the physical drive or “ego” needed to compete at the highest level.
The Spaniard, known for his strong family bonds, credits his upbringing for shaping him. His uncle’s strict training methods, his sister’s role in introducing him to his wife, and his mother’s emotional support have all contributed to his success.
Nadal married his childhood sweetheart, Maria Francisca Perello, in 2019 after dating for 17 years. Their son, Rafael Nadal Jr., was born in October 2022 and is already a familiar face in Maria’s social media posts. At the Paris Olympics, the toddler waved a racquet from his mother’s lap while his father played doubles with Carlos Alcaraz.
Although proud of his achievements, Nadal hopes his son will follow a different path.
“I would prefer he plays another sport, if I’m being honest… It pains me to say it because of everything tennis has given me,” Nadal said. “If he chooses tennis, I will support him 100 percent, but another sport would be better.”
Nadal also spoke about how fatherhood has changed his life.
“It’s a big change, no doubt. Any parent will tell you it’s something you have to adapt to,” he said.
His sister, Maribel, plays an active role in his life. She is the deputy director of Nadal’s Academy and launched her own fashion brand, Crabs Company, in 2023. Like the rest of his family, she remains close to Nadal, embodying the strong familial ties that define him.
Despite his wealth and luxurious lifestyle, Nadal values his roots. He stays connected to his family, often renting homes during tournaments so he can be surrounded by loved ones.
“Everybody is really close. I see my family every day,” Nadal once said, showing that even a global star remains grounded by the people who matter most.
