Rangers Edge AS Sobemap On Penalties, Reach CAF Champions League Second Round
Rangers International have progressed to the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League after beating Benin Republic’s AS Sobemap 5-4 on penalties on Friday in Lomé, Togo.
The Flying Antelopes played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Abeokuta and were held to another 1-1 draw in the return leg at the Stade de Kégué.
Neither team could find the winning goal during regulation time, leaving the tie level at 2-2 on aggregate.
The match was therefore decided by a penalty shootout, where Rangers kept their composure to win 5-4 and secure their place in the next round.
The result keeps the Nigerian champions in the CAF Champions League and gives them another chance to push for a place in the group stage.
Rangers International will face the winner of the second preliminary round tie between ASN Nigelec of Niger Republic and Algerian club MC Alger.
The Enugu-based side will now turn their attention to the next stage as they continue their quest for a place among Africa’s top clubs.
