Raphael Onyedika Scores First Champions League Goal but Manchester City Stage Comeback to Win

Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika netted his first UEFA Champions League goal in stunning fashion, but Manchester City fought back in the second half to claim a crucial 3-1 victory over Club Brugge at the City of Manchester Stadium.

Onyedika’s Stunning Opener

Club Brugge stunned the home crowd when Onyedika struck a brilliant first-time shot into the net just before half-time. The Nigerian midfielder latched onto a loose ball inside the box and rifled a right-footed effort past Ederson, leaving Pep Guardiola’s side trailing at the break.

Despite dominating possession, City struggled to break down Brugge’s resilient defence in the first half. The visitors looked dangerous on the counterattack, with Onyedika’s goal capping a disciplined display from Ronny Deila’s side.

City’s Second-Half Comeback

Manchester City emerged from the break with renewed intensity, and their pressure paid off just nine minutes into the second half. Mateo Kovačić levelled the score with a composed finish from the edge of the box after a driving run through midfield.

City then turned the game around in the 62nd minute when Josko Gvardiol’s cross was inadvertently turned into his own net by Club Brugge defender Joel Ordoñez. The own goal gave the home side the lead and shifted momentum firmly in their favour.

Half-time substitute Savinho sealed the victory in the 77th minute, producing a superb chest control and finish from John Stones’ diagonal pass. His goal ensured City’s place in the Champions League knockout phase, completing a spirited second-half fightback.

City’s Play-off Hopes Alive

With this victory, Manchester City booked a place in the Champions League play-off.

City boss Pep Guardiola praised his team’s resilience, saying: “We struggled in the first half, but the response after the break was fantastic. Savinho changed the game, and we showed why we are one of the best teams in Europe.”

Meanwhile, Onyedika’s performance earned plaudits, with the Nigerian midfielder proving to be a key figure for Brugge. His goal may not have secured a win, but it marked a significant moment in his career on Europe’s biggest stage.
