Real Madrid Women Make History with First-Ever Win Over Barcelona
Real Madrid Women made history on Sunday by beating Barcelona for the first time ever in the Women’s Clasico. Real ended a run of 18 straight defeats against their rivals with a stunning 3-1 win away from home.
Scotland’s Caroline Weir was the hero for Real Madrid, coming off the bench to score twice late in the match. Alba Redondo had given Real the lead in the first half with a header, but Barcelona equalised through Norway’s Caroline Graham Hansen in the 67th minute.
Barca thought they had taken the lead with nine minutes to go, but Jana Fernandez’s goal was ruled out for offside.
With just three minutes left, substitute Weir made it 2-1 for Real Madrid after a clever pass from Linda Caicedo. Weir then sealed the historic win with a header deep into injury time at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.
The victory was a big surprise as Barcelona had already beaten Real Madrid four times this season, including an 8-1 win on aggregate in the Copa de la Reina semi-finals.
This result cuts Barcelona’s lead at the top of Liga F to just four points, with seven games left to play. It’s also only the second time Barca have dropped points in the league this season, after their 2-1 defeat to Levante in February, which ended their 46-match unbeaten run.
Real Madrid will now shift their focus to the Champions League. They play Arsenal in the quarter-final second leg on Wednesday at the Emirates Stadium, holding a 2-0 lead from the first match.
