Red-hot Awoniyi scores to keep Forest safe, crown City champions
Nottingham Forest stun Arsenal to hand Manchester City title
Taiwo Awoniyi scored for a third successive game to help Nottingham Forest secure a 1-0 win over Arsenal and secure their Premier League status for next season.
Needing a win to keep the title race alive, Arsenal travelled to City Ground to face relegation battlers Nottingham Forest, who needed to avoid defeat to remain in the Premier League.
Forest started the game with intent as they looked to rattle Arsenal in the opening exchanges. The Gunners were seeing most of the ball without any penetration as the home side sat deep and launched long balls to lone striker Awoniyi.
In the 19th minute of the encounter, Nottingham Forest scored against the run of play. A loose pass from Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard in midfield set the Reds up in attack, and Morgan Gibbs-White played a through ball to Awoniyi. The Super Eagles striker slipped his effort past Aaron Ramsdale to net his ninth league goal of the season.
Arsenal struggled to break down the resolute Reds throughout the game as they held on for a vital win. Nottingham Forest have secured their survival in the Premier League with the win, also helping Manchester City seal a third straight Premier League title.
Arsenal will end the season at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers while Nottingham Forest travel to Crystal Palace for their season finale. Awoniyi has scored five goals in his last three games against Southampton, Chelsea and Arsenal to help his side survive.
